Compass Energizes 8MW of New Proprietary Bitcoin Mine in Iowa

Compass Mining has energized the first 8 megawatts (MW) of its new proprietary Bitcoin mining facility in Iowa.
Compass said on Tuesday that construction on the remaining capacity is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter. The facility, located on a five-acre greenfield site, represents the company’s latest push to expand its proprietary infrastructure footprint and marks a shift toward greater operational control.
Compass previously announced the acquisition of land and power agreements for the Iowa mine in November, initially expecting to energize the first 8 MW in January. The company said at the time that it was planning to expand the site to 30 MW pending additional infrastructure investments.
By fully owning and operating the site, Compass aims to offer improved reliability and flexibility to customers, who can now opt to deploy new machines to the facility, designated “Iowa 4.” Until now, the company has primarily relied on third-party hosting partnerships.
“Owning and operating our own sites gives customers greater operational control,” said Compass CEO Paul Gosker.
The Iowa energization follows Compass’s recent deployment of a hydro-cooled mining facility in North Dakota and forms part of a broader U.S. expansion plan. In 2024, the company brought nearly 50 MW of capacity online across Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Kentucky, Nebraska, and Texas.
